  It is a very common situation of having such a team member who was dutiful before. But after some time, the member becomes less active. Becomes unable to submit his tasks in time. And dealing with this type of teammate creates problems. A team's success depends on perfect teamwork. And problems in teamwork for a particular team member can be very harmful to the whole team. And the whole team would pay for this loss, only for one team member. That's why a team leader should not tolerate this type of carelessness of any team member. That's why a team leader should mentally as strong as to say goodbye to a fellow team member, maybe he be a good friend of him. That's why it is always a great practice to keep personal life and professional life different, to achieve success.

From my past experience, I can explain this type of situation. As I have already completed some projects being a team leader in my school and college life. I'm sometimes have faced with this type of situation. I would like to share my experience with one of the projects I was handling. Normally I take my friends as my team member whom I think is perfect for that particular project. Like this once, I have created one team of five members for completing one hardware project to participate in an event. All team members were my batchmate and were my good friend. 

At the starting of the project, everyone was very committed and was very much focused on their tasks. It was a long project for more than two months. Everything was fine at the beginning. But after two and a half weeks one of our team members got totally disconnected for 1 week. It was a very tough situation for us as we have to do the extra work that was associated with their team member. It also increased our individual workloads. In every team, an individual team member remains an expert in individual domains. That's why we are unable to receive that quality that can be achieved by him. But after one week this was not entertaining anymore. And the biggest problem was that he was a very good friend of ours. 

Almost after 10 days, he contacted us and informed us that he was ill and will not be able to join our team for two or three weeks. As I was the leader of the team and my team members became exhausted from handling the extra part of the work assigned for him. And I also realized that if this continues for a long time we may have to face failure. But as I tell you he was a good friend of all of us and we had also a very strong friendly relation. That's why it was very difficult for me to replace him with anyone.
After that, I called a group meeting to discuss this matter. And to know if my team I can handle the upcoming two or three weeks without him or we need a replacement for him. After discussing I found that it will be much better if we have a replacement for him. 

Now it was my time to take a final decision. And I was very clear, I was the leader of the team and my main motto was to lead my team towards success. And I never mix up my professional life with my personal life. Though it was quite tough for me to say goodbye, for now, there was no other way left for me. I called him and gently told him to take a rest, not to worry about this project. I made him understand that we need him in our future projects, that's why he should take proper care of himself without any pressure and headache. So he should take proper rest for now. And luckily he agreed without any further questions. Thus I took another member from my batchmate, who was perfectly matching for the position. And we continued our progress for that project.

As we are human we can't do multiple things at the same time. That's why to achieve something you have to say no to the other.
